Wisconsin’s Department of Justice now requires law enforcement officers to undergo de-escalation tactic training.
Instructors with the Milwaukee Area Technical College Oak Creek police training facility have taught brief lessons on de-escalation in the past, but new this year, the state is requiring training in de-escalation tactics.
On Tuesday, WISN 12 watched 17 police officers from five different police departments across the greater Milwaukee area as they sat through a de-escalation training class.
First, officers sat through a two-hour classroom setting, where instructors went over different de-escalation tactics.
The final two hours of the day were reserved for officers to apply what they learned in the classroom to different simulated exercises, both virtually with a video simulation and in-person with the trainer.
“Changing the mindset is the biggest part of de-escalation,” said Tony Reilly, a training coordinator at MATC police law enforcement training. “Allowing for distance and slowing things down, so you can manage them and get a positive resolution.”
