Basic Jailer Academy 2023
The 200-Hour Jail Officer Academy trainee will learn key concepts and skills for jail operations and guidelines for protecting inmates. Wisconsin Department of Justice – Training and Standards Bureau curriculum meets certification requirements for corrections officers.
Milwaukee Area Technical College in conjunction with the Milwaukee County House of Correction will be conducting the Wisconsin Basic Jailer Academy.
This training will be conducted at the following facility:

Four Class Opportunities in 2023
- Opportunity # 1: January 2nd to February 3rd, 2023
- Opportunity # 2: March 6th to April 7th, 2023
- Opportunity #3: May 9th to June 30th, 2023
- Opportunity #4: October 2nd to November 3rd, 2023
Requirements and Minimum Standards
Entrance requirements for Pre-Service students (non-agency employed):
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be a citizen of the United States.
- Possess a High School diploma, GED certificate, or HSED diploma.
- Undergo a criminal history records check.
- Complete an oral interview with a panel.
- Undergo a physical assessment.
Entrance requirements for agency employed students:
- The employing agency must provide a copy of the employee’s Training History Report.
- Complete form DJ-LE-310, Student Authorization for Release of Information.
Completion of the Jail Officer
This 200-hour Basic Training course meets State of Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board requirements for certification.
- Employed candidates become certified upon presentation of their academy transcripts to the Standards Board and upon board approval.
- Candidates seeking employment (Pre-Service) have two (2) years from completion of the course to secure a Jail Officer position in order to become certified.
